The Great South Window

The Great South Window of the South West Transept

The fifteenth century Great South Window is one of the largest in Canterbury Cathedral and contains some of the finest early medieval stained glass in Europe. We need urgently to address some structural failings in a programme likely to cost £500,000.

Much of the stone tracery in the window is fractured, and some pieces have come away, placing the window and stained glass at risk.

The priceless stained glass has been carefully removed. It will be on public display while repairs to the window take place. This portrait of Methuselah is thought to be the finest of its date anywhere.

A three stage £500,000 repair programme will repair the tracery, strengthen the transept vaulting, and fix the medieval drain outside, which may be the cause of the problems.
