Cathedral Apprentices

Many of the skills learned by Canterbury Cathedral’s Craft Apprentices date back to medieval times. It is vital to keep these timeless skills alive. Particularly as, unlike Canterbury, most Cathedrals do not have their own dedicated craft workshops.

The training of Canterbury Cathedral’s seven craft apprentices costs a total of around £100,000 a year.

Many of the tools are also unchanged since medieval times, but are now very expensive. A chisel costs £20 — a small kit would contain at least ten.

This investment in Canterbury’s timeless craft skills is essential to the success of the Cathedral’s multi-million pound conservation programme.
