Andrew Edwards, currently chief executive of the National Churches Trust, will be joining the Canterbury Gift as chief executive in August 2011. The Canterbury Gift is the charity which raises money in support of conservation, education, craftsmanship and music at Canterbury Cathedral. Andrew replaces Matthew Butler, who in November told the Trustees of his plan to stand down this July after more than three years in the role, during which time the total raised by Charity has reached around £12m.
Andrew Edwards said “I am thrilled to be joining the team at Canterbury Cathedral and look forward to working with Trustees and staff on ensuring this beautiful and important building continues to fulfil its role for future generations”.
Lord De L’Isle, Chairman of the Cathedral’s Trustees, said: “We are delighted to welcome Andrew, who will bring to The Canterbury Gift a wide range of experience, not least in having led a national charity which supports, promotes and raises money in support of church buildings across the United Kingdom. Matthew has laid the foundation for the work of The Canterbury Gift and we are fortunate to have had his services.”
The Development Committee is headed by Richard Oldfield, who said: “The Development Committee is now fully formed and fully engaged. We have a busy time ahead and are delighted that Andrew will be with us to take charge.”
The Dean has invited Matthew Butler to join the group of Advisers to the Canterbury Gift. Advisers include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Ken Follett, David Starkey and Joanna Lumley.
Matthew Butler said: “It has been a tremendous privilege to lead this great challenge. It is a marvellous tribute to all our donors that they continue to support us so generously when the economic background is so tough for many people”
