Handel's Messiah

14 March 2010

The Cathedral Nave was brimming with expectation as family and friends of the performers were joined by enthusiasts of great Cathedral Music. Dr. David Flood directed two hundred and thirty singers and seventeen members of the orchestra, applying a deft touch to capture an uplifting performance of Handel's Messiah.

Two of the four soloists were covering at short notice and were most appreciated, being well supported by a harmonious and passionate choir. Both orchestra and organ played sensitively and managed to capture the essence of the Messiah throughout the performance. The interpretation of the aria "I know that my redeemer liveth" sung by Penelope Martin-Smith was outstanding.

It was difficult to believe that the choir had practiced only once in the Cathedral, as the music they created was nothing short of magnificent. The depths of sadness of the Messiah's death captured the essence of tragedy, and juxtaposed perfectly with the Hallelujah Chorus which exuded optimism and happiness for the future and glorification of the risen dead.

It was a brilliant, bright and joyous occasion, full of light and shade to illustrate their performance. This combination, infused with the passion of the performers, offered us a glimpse of the profound insights to which splendours of the Messiah can open up to us. The choir's enthusiasm shone through as did the enjoyment felt by all who had gathered to listen.

So far over £7000 has been raised for the Canterbury Gift from this performance and perhaps it would not be out of place to say that the singing gave us a little bit of 'heaven here on earth'.

This wonderful concert has now been produced as a CD for all to enjoy. Click here to download an order form.
