One of the major projects funded by The Canterbury Gift has been the restoration of the South East Transept. This work began with the re-leading of the Transept’s main roof.
Since then, medieval timbers have been discovered in the Transept’s staircase tower roof – these too will now be conserved and the roof restored.
The entire roof of Canterbury Cathedral is made up of more than 3,000 lead tiles. It was last re-leaded over 150 years ago, and much of it is now due for replacement.
It is a big project but one which must be tackled sooner rather than later. The nave roof, which requires the most urgent attention, is almost 60 metres long; longer than an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Other areas to be re-leaded include the remaining transept roofs, each of which is larger than the average parish church.
How you can help
The Canterbury Gift is pleased to offer you an opportunity to invest in the future of Canterbury Cathedral by sponsoring a new lead tile for its roof. Each tile costs £1,000 and is a special way to leave a lasting legacy.
