A message from the Dean of Canterbury

Robert Willis
Dean of Canterbury

As I receive visitors to Canterbury day by day, either in large groups or individually, and show them around the building, making them feel at home, I am very conscious that the more they experience of this holy and historic place, the more they feel gratitude for the gift which is Canterbury. It is exactly the same when I travel to different areas of the world and speak with those who have been here or even with those who listen to part of the story of this place. There is a sense of gratitude for all that has been created and accomplished throughout the centuries to make the building and the community of Canterbury what they are today.

In this website you will read of words like ‘inspiration and encouragement’, of words like ‘human and divine’, like ‘purpose, perspective and unique’. These words are attempts to describe something of what people receive from the experience they have here. It is an experience which owes a great deal to the faith of the past and to the faith and creativity of the present but they are words which give hope for the future too.

The preciousness of this gift is such that we who love this place are determined to protect what we have received and develop the gift further to be handed on for future generations. This website is an invitation for anyone who feels gratitude for the Canterbury Gift to join us in this endeavour.
